What is ABV?
ABV (Alcohol by Volume) measures the percentage of alcohol in a beverage. It’s calculated using the difference between Original Gravity (OG) and Final Gravity (FG), which reflect sugar content before and after fermentation.
The Science of Fermentation
Yeast converts sugars into alcohol and CO2 during fermentation, reducing the liquid’s density (gravity). For example, beer starts at a higher OG (e.g., 1.050) and ends at a lower FG (e.g., 1.010) as sugars are consumed.
Real-Life Examples
- Beer: OG 1.040–1.060, FG 1.008–1.015, ABV 4–6%
- Wine: OG 1.080–1.100, FG 0.990–1.010, ABV 10–15%
- Juice: Non-fermented, OG reflects sugar content (e.g., 1.040)
Formula Breakdown
Basic ABV: ABV = (OG – FG) × 131.25
Advanced: ABV = [(OG – FG) × 1.05 / FG] × 135.94
